This tour is based on the East side of São Miguel which is the oldest area of this island going back about 4.2 million years.
We will start our tour driving by the South coast towards the city of Lagoa crossing than to the North side of the island being our first stop at Miradouro de Santa Iría, where you will have a dramatic view over the North coast of the Island, being able to spot the big volcano of Sete Cidades and the highest point of the Island called Pico da Vara at 1105 meters high.
Continuing our tour by the North coast, our nest stop will be at “Salto do Cavalo”, a spectacular mountain top view, standing at 760 meters high, overlooking the volcano of Furnas and the village of Povoação and its big extinct volcano caldeira, considered the biggest of the island.
From “Salto do Cavalo” we will go down for a visit to the village of Povoação, where the first settlers came first to this island back in 1432.
After visiting Povoação our next stop will be the view point of “Pico Longo” from this view, you will see from a different angle the village of Povoaçao and it’s Lombas, back than know by the wheat and corn valley.
Ponta do Sossego, a beautiful garden surround by old mountains and sea is waiting for you. An unforgettable stop.
Before we arrive at the village of Nordeste you will have the opportunity to look at the oldest light house of the Azores from Vista dos Barcos view, build back in 1876, called “Farol do Arnel”
At the Village of Nordeste, the main village of the county once was considered one of the gardens of Europe winning a prize in 1994 which they proudly display at the Town Hall. This will be the place where we will make a stop for lunch.
Our last stop, before we head back to Ponta Delgada, will be on the North coast at the place called “Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeirões”, where waterfalls, gardens and picnic areas gives a special touch to the park.
